Night curtains, also called blackout curtains, are engineered to block the maximum amount of light — essential in Singapore where street lighting, neighbouring unit glare, and the early tropical sunrise (as early as 6:46am) can disrupt sleep. They are the go-to choice for bedrooms, media rooms, and any space where complete darkness is needed.
Blackout performance depends on both fabric technology and installation. Coated blackout fabrics achieve 98–100% light blockage, while triple-weave blackout (a tightly woven, layered construction with no coating) typically achieves 80–95%. Triple-weave is more durable in Singapore's humid climate because there is no coating to deteriorate. Regardless of fabric, installing the track as close to the ceiling as possible and extending it 10–20cm beyond the window frame on each side eliminates the light gaps that reduce effectiveness.
Night curtains are most commonly paired with day curtains on a dual-track system, giving full flexibility: sheer during the day, complete darkness at night.
Coated blackout polyester (98–100% light block) or triple-weave blackout fabric (80–95% light block). Triple-weave uses a bonded three-layer construction with no chemical coating — more durable in humid conditions. Available in a wide range of colours and textures.
Hung from a ceiling-mounted track (usually the outer track in a dual-track setup) or a wall-mounted rod. Drawn open and closed by hand, cord, or motorised system. For maximum blackout, the track should be mounted as close to the ceiling as possible, with the curtain extending beyond the window frame on all sides.
Essential for HDB bedrooms facing east or west, where sunrise from 6:46am and afternoon sun are intense. Standard HDB bedroom windows (1.5–2.1m wide) are well suited to pre-made blackout panels. In BTO flats with larger windows, custom sizing is recommended to avoid light gaps.
Triple-weave blackout fabrics outperform coated options in Singapore's humidity — no coating means no risk of delamination over time. Blackout curtains also act as a heat barrier, reducing solar heat gain through glass and lowering air conditioning usage during the day.
Spot clean or gentle machine wash in cold water. Avoid tumble drying coated fabrics as heat accelerates coating deterioration. Triple-weave fabrics are more wash-tolerant. Inspect for mould growth at the base where fabric may touch walls — maintain a small gap between the curtain hem and the floor.
