Roman blinds are fabric window coverings that fold into neat horizontal pleats when raised and fall flat as a panel when lowered. Unlike roller blinds that roll the fabric, roman blinds stack the fabric in overlapping folds — creating a soft, structured look that is warmer and more decorative than most blind types. They bring the visual richness of curtain fabric to the compact profile of a blind.
Roman blinds are available in a wide range of fabrics — from lightweight linens and cottons for a relaxed feel to heavier structured fabrics for a more formal look. Dimout or blackout linings can be added behind any face fabric, giving the decorative benefits of roman blinds alongside practical light control. This makes them particularly popular in Singapore bedrooms and living rooms where aesthetics are a priority.
The flat panel profile when lowered and the neat folds when raised give roman blinds a clean, tailored look that suits both contemporary and traditional interiors. They are custom-made rather than off-the-shelf, ensuring a precise fit for any window.
Face fabric options include linen, cotton, polyester-linen blends, and structured jacquard weaves. Linings include plain cotton (for shape), dimout linings (60–85% light block), or blackout linings (98–100%). Rod pockets or rings at the back maintain the pleat structure.
A series of horizontal rods or dowels are sewn into channels at the back of the fabric at regular intervals. When the blind is raised via a cord mechanism at the side or back, each rod lifts and the fabric folds in neat horizontal pleats. Fully lowered, the blind hangs flat across the window.
Roman blinds are custom-made, making them a good fit for HDB bay windows and alcoves where standard-size off-the-shelf blinds do not fit well. In HDB bedrooms, a roman blind with dimout lining provides comfortable light reduction with a softer aesthetic than standard roller or venetian blinds.
Polyester-linen blends are more suitable for Singapore's humidity than pure linen or cotton, which can absorb moisture and develop mould in poorly ventilated rooms. Blackout or dimout linings add a layer of thermal insulation, slightly reducing heat gain through the fabric. Ensure roman blinds are fully raised when not in use to allow air circulation behind the fabric.
Vacuum lightly with an upholstery attachment every 3–6 months to remove dust from the fabric folds. Spot clean stains immediately with a mild upholstery cleaner. For a full wash, the blind cover can often be unhooked and machine washed on a gentle cycle — check the specific fabric care label. Air dry completely before re-hanging to prevent mould in the fold pockets.
