Dimout curtains occupy the middle ground between sheer day curtains and full blackout night curtains. They reduce incoming light by approximately 60–85%, creating a noticeably darker and more comfortable environment without achieving complete darkness. This makes them ideal for rooms where total blackout is unnecessary but unfiltered tropical sun is unwanted.
Unlike blackout curtains, dimout fabrics are typically tightly woven medium-weight textiles — they look and drape like standard curtains but have a denser weave that significantly reduces glare and heat. They come in a wide range of colours and textures, making them a popular choice when interior aesthetics matter as much as light control.
In Singapore, dimout curtains are commonly used in living rooms, dining areas, and studies where occupants want a comfortable, softened light environment during the day without closing off the room completely. They are also a good choice for bedrooms where full blackout is not necessary — for example, rooms facing north or south that receive less direct sunlight.
Medium-weight tightly woven polyester or polyester-cotton blends. No coating required — the opacity comes from the density of the weave. Available in a wide range of colours, textures, and patterns.
Hung from a ceiling-mounted track or wall-mounted rod, operated by hand or cord. Can be used as a single layer or as the outer layer in a dual-track setup paired with a sheer inner curtain for layered light control.
A practical choice for HDB living rooms in west-facing units where afternoon sun creates glare but blackout is too heavy for social spaces. Works well in both 3-room and 4-room HDB layouts as a single-track curtain or outer layer over a sheer. Standard HDB curtain track lengths (2.4–3m) are compatible with most ready-made dimout panels.
The medium-weight weave provides a meaningful barrier against solar heat gain during Singapore's high-UV midday hours, reducing reliance on air conditioning. Unlike coated fabrics, dimout curtains have no coating to deteriorate in the heat and humidity — they maintain their light-blocking performance throughout their lifespan.
Machine washable in cold water on a gentle cycle. Air dry or tumble dry on low. Polyester dimout fabrics are mould-resistant and maintain shape well through repeated washing. Inspect and clean every 6–12 months to remove dust that accumulates in the weave.
